Workshop Description
Science and Health Science Curriculum Workshops
Workshops consist of professional teacher training Science and Health Science Curriculum related to our Veterinary Black Bag Program.  This curriculum (suitable for grades 5-9) consists of online presentation materials for classroom visits by practicing veterinarians and instructional follow-up lessons by teachers. The goal is to use students’ natural interest in animals to help motivate them to learn science. The purpose is not to promote veterinary medicine directly, but rather use it as a hook to capitalize on the inherent interest and curiosity that students already have for animals. The specific goal of this National Institutes of Health sponsored program is to promote public understanding of the use of animals in biomedical research and of the clinical trial research process.

A variety of themes is available, each of which relates to areas of activity that are commonly found in a veterinary clinic but also relates to human and animal health. Thus, veterinarians are able to use props, demos, and anecdotes related to real-world health activities and integrate these into science instruction. Following veterinarian’s visits, standard-based science instruction takes place in the form of follow-up lessons (usually three) by teachers.

Lessons and classroom visits emphasize biomedical and physical science in an attempt to promote understanding of the research (basic, animal, and human clinical trials) and development process upon which modern medicine, both veterinary and human, depends. Instructions for veterinarians and for teachers, as well as all lesson plans, are available for download.  All instructional materials are available at no charge.

Workshops are free to teachers and schools.  In addition, PEER will reimburse teachers for meals and
transportation and will pay lodging expenses (lodging the night before and the 1st night of the workshop (for 2 day workshops) and only for teachers living >70 miles from the workshop location) up to, but not to exceed, $225 total expenses for all meals, transportation, and lodging.   [Note: A limit of 20-30 teachers per workshop is dictated by the number of computers available at each workshop location.]

To attend a workshop, teachers must complete our online registration.
