Animal Teeth FDA and Your Teeth Bacteria and Dental Health
Objectives Students will:

1. Demonstrate function of teeth for animal and for humans.
2. Describe why dental health is essential to overall pet health.
3. Describe the cause of periodontal disease.
4. Demonstrate experiments to assess protective effects of home dental care.
Students will:

1. Describe role of deciduous and permanent teeth.

2. Describe how dental formula can be used to age veterinary patients – horse.
Students will:

1. Describe the role of the FDA in human and animal medicine.

2. Learn how to read and interpret product labels on over-the-counter health products.
Students will:

1. Describe the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

2. Describe biological properties of bacteria and growth conditions..

3. Describe bacterial oxygen preference and enzymes that relate to dental disease.
Major Content Preventative dental care. Estimating horse’s age by their teeth. FDA as a scientific and regulatory agency. Describe how basic knowledge of bacteria applies to a disease process.

3. Demonstration materials – fluoride solution, white vinegar, 3 eggs, 3 containers, 1 jar peanut butter, latex gloves, toothbrushes, dental floss, animal (stuffed/live).

Activities/ demos Protective effects of fluoride.

Assessment of home dental care Pet dental maintenance.
Students will participate in a game/contest where they estimate age of horses. Exercise on interpreting common drug labels. Look at slides or photos of bacteria to view differences of morphology and gram stain.

Students select from a list of pathogens and develop a poster describing the pathogen and its actions.
Student assessment Ask students to interpret demos as they are conducted. Divide students into competing teams to assess age of animals. Grade the worksheet. Grade the “Most” Wanted poster.
