Pros & Cons of Animal Research |
Case Study |
Care of Lab
Animals |
|
Objectives |
Students will:
1. Learn the scientific method .
2. Understand the veterinarian’s view on why it is useful and necessary,
for both human and animal medicine, to use animals in biomedical
research. |
This lesson’s purpose is to debate the use of animals in scientific
research and to create an awareness of the scientific research
community.
Students will:
1. Research information on the use of animals in scientific research.
2. Tabulate results of a pre/post survey on using animals for research.
3. Conduct a debate on the pros and cons about animal use in research
based on factual information.
4. Design a poster defending the key points. |
Students will:
1. Learn how scientists follow the scientific method in their research.
2. Be able to explain how animal research has benefited human medicine.
3. Correctly interpret data using graphs. |
Students will be able to:
1. Identify the alternatives to using animals in research and explain
why it is still necessary to use animals.
2. Explain how the government regulates animal research and requires
humane care of laboratory animals.
3. Explain what a central laboratory animal care facility is and how it
operates.
4. Identify career fields represented in such facilities.
5. Explain the advantages of such facilities for the animals and for
researchers. |
|
Major Content |
The scientific method, and human and animal benefits of animal research
(examples: heart disease, infections, ophthalmology, joint problems,
metabolic disorders) |
The pros and cons of animal
research (this lesson could be presented before the veterinarian’s
visit)
Pre- and post-surveys will be used to see if opinions have changed as a
result of the lesson.
|
Results of a study performed using monkeys and guinea pigs to determine
whether the polio and DPT vaccines are more effective if given together
or separately
Students will be given the results of tests and asked to make their own
conclusions by creating and interpreting graphs. |
Standards
used for the housing and care of laboratory animals, pictures of a
modern laboratory animal care facility, and standard operational
procedures |
