What is the NSF GK-12 Program?
The education of middle-school students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is critical to meeting the scientific and technological workforce’s future. The PEER GK-12 (Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) and NSF GK-12) unites students, teachers, and scientists to enhance academic performance of middle school students in STEM and career interest in science and mathematics.
|
What are Lead Teachers?
They are mentors,
organizers, and facilitators. They will work directly with Graduate
Students which we call Resident Scientist/Resident Mathematician (RS/RM).
Besides working with the RS/RM, Lead Teachers will ensure that other
teachers in their school have the opportunity to work with the RS/RM at
times. Lead teachers are full partners in the PEER GK-12 Program.
|
Responsibilities of Lead Teachers include:
- Assist the RS/RM to be a STEM content resource for your K12 students
and provide
the RS/RM opportunity to make presentations in classes.
- Mentoring of RS/RM to improve
their pedagogical, communication and teamwork
skills.
- Assist the RS/RM in planning
ahead on topics to be covered soon in your classes to
facilitate the use of undergraduate students assigned to RS/RM in locating
websites, selecting/developing activities, and
initiating lesson plans.
- Help make the RS/RM a
school-wide resource.
- Complete a weekly online
journal.
- Attend an hour-long, monthly
Lead Teachers’ Meeting.
- Be willing and able to freely
communicate with RS/RM or Program Management
concerning success and problems.
|
What are
Resident Scientist/Mathematicians (RS/RM)?
RS/RM are full-time graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. They are usually taking 9-12 credits of graduate courses, doing research, or both. RS/RM are chosen because of their potential to be future leaders in their fields: they are not planning on becoming K-12 teachers. We hope that, in ten years, they will be the faculty at a University and will know how to effectively work with teachers – and are interested in doing so.
