Temperature can affect water and the organisms that live in water in several ways.  Temperature affects:

  • the amount of oxygen that can be dissolved in the water,

  • the temperature of the organisms within the water and their activity, rate of growth and reproduction,

  • the rate of photosynthesis by plants in the water, and

  • the health of organisms in the water.

Water temperature is usually measured with a thermometer.
