Activity 8 

Orientation

The purpose of this activity is to learn how the oxygen cycle and carbon dioxide cycle are interdependent within an ecosystem.

Materials
2 small thermometers (make sure to use alcohol, NOT mercury):  – standard glass lab thermometers are about 25 cm long

1 large jar with a lid–make sure the jar is large enough that the thermometer fits inside

1 clock or watch

Bright desk lamp or sunny window

Graph paper (one piece per student)

Markers

2 strips of cardboard about 2 cm longer and 4 cm wider than the thermometer (cardboard must be stiff and strong enough to support the thermometer)

Rubber band

Ruler – one per student; pencil

At least two colored pens per student

Chart paper
