We are joining with the
Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER) program to present
science teacher professional development workshops during the summer of 2011. These
workshops are designed to give middle school science teachers the resources they need
to address the new 2010 Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as well as the
National Science Standards.
As part of the professional
development
workshops, we will

newly developed curriculum to teach information
on zoonotic diseases (diseases
transmitted to people from animals). The lessons
are designed to capitalize on students’ natural
interest in animals and infectious diseases to
help motivate them to learn the required science
curriculum.
Registration and attendance is free of charge
and all materials demonstrated during the
workshop are free to download. In addition,
participating teachers will be reimbursed for
meals, transportation, and lodging (the 1st
night of the workshop and for teachers living
>70 miles from the workshop location) up to, but
not to exceed, $150 total expenses for all
meals, transportation, and lodging. [Note: A
limit of 20-30 teachers per workshop is dictated
by the number of computers available at each
workshop location.]
